Single User Bathrooms Must be Gender Neutral
As of March 1, 2017, all businesses that offer single-user restrooms must designate that the restroom is available for use by all genders. This requirement includes restrooms in the offices of private employers, even if they are not open to the public. Single-user restrooms are those with no more than one toilet and one urinal, with a locking mechanism controlled by the user. Employers who have not yet done so should change any gender-specific signage as soon as possible.

Employer and Human Resource Topic:

 I. One of our employees who is moving from exempt to non-exempt is taking the change in classification personally. Even after a company-wide meeting with those affected where everything was clearly explained, this employee insisted on having one-on-one follow up meetings with five different managers. We would like to write him up due to the excessive amount of time he has taken from his work and the work of the managers. Do you have any suggestions for the best way to handle this?

II. We plan on offering group health insurance sometime soon, but in the meantime, we’d like to give employees medical reimbursements in their paychecks in lieu of offering insurance. Is this allowed?

III. We currently have the federal workplace posters displayed in the lunch room. We want to use that space on the wall for other things, and we were thinking of moving the posters to the employee entrance. What are the posting location guidelines?

IV. I have an exempt employee who only worked one day this week, but claims he needs to be paid for the whole week. Is that right?

V. An employee of ours has gone on FMLA leave to care for a family member, and she asked us via email to tell her co-workers the reason she’s taking time off. Is this okay?

VI. Are we allowed to look through an employee's email while they are still employed?

VII. Several employees have complained that one of our managers is regularly abrasive and rude, yelling at employees and sometimes insulting them. Could he be creating a hostile work environment?
